Project Description

Barnrose liaised with the local authority’s historic conservation team to ensure a sensitive and respectful restoration.

Externally, the rear of the property had suffered structural movement, so lateral ties were installed to ensure stability. Many bricks had deteriorated through spalling and were repaired or replaced, with lime repointing undertaken to match the original finish. The sash windows were meticulously restored, while the front door was refurbished and fitted with antique brass hardware. The stonework, roof, and chimney were overhauled to safeguard the property’s historic integrity.

The front garden was fully landscaped with an Indian sandstone patio, flanked by a red brick dwarf wall flowerbeds planted with lavender. The area to the front was laid to a figure-of-eight lawn to accommodate existing mature trees, with additional planting introduced for seasonal colour. A timber shed was installed at the far end of the garden to provide useful storage.

Internally, the property was completely stripped out and renovated to meet the standards of 21st-century living. The basement was damp-proofed using a Newtonite lath system with perimeter drainage. Lath and plaster ceilings were replaced on a like-for-like basis, while stone and timber floors on the ground floor were carefully restored. Traditional cornices were installed throughout to replicate the originals, and working period fireplaces and column radiators were fitted in keeping with the period style A classic Shaker kitchen was fitted, complete with a detailed surround for an Aga oven, and handmade cabinetry provided practical storage solutions. The loft area was boarded and carpeted to create additional storage space.

The transformation brought the property back to its former glory while sensitively integrating modern comforts.
